Lunapads Review & Giveaway

I am excited to introduce you to another eco-friendly alternative to our conventional feminine care products, Lunapads! STOP! Before you say Ewww! and click away (like I used to think), let me encourage you to just read this post with an open mind, gain some knowledge and consider the possibilities! When I use to read about cloth menstrual pads, well honestly I wouldn’t because I thought they were so disgusting! But then I began to learn about all the health risks with conventional products and the environmental effects of feminine care products, plus the fact that these products along with the waste were being dumped in landfills that contained leaks and were seeping into our water supplies… well I thought that was much more gross!

Let’s face it our period is a wonderful gift from God! Yes, you heard me. Without this wonderful gift women would not have the ability to bring little lives into this world! It’s time that we accept and embrace Aunt Flow’s visit and find out how to best take care of her. Lunapads offers a great eco-friendly way to care for yourself during this special time.

Lunapads is women owned company based in Canada, that provides washable, reusable cloth menstrual pads, underwear and more. The purchase of 1 Lunapad replaces 140 disposable pads or tampons!

Lunapads photo cross section

Pad – The uniquely designed washable cloth menstrual pads feature a Pad Base with wings that fasten around the gusset of your underwear, and a Liner Insert that is secured to the top of the Pad with ric-rac bands.  The Lunapads Pad Base contains 2 layers of 100% cotton fleece, 1 layer of ultra-thin nylon to minimize soaking through and 2 layers of 100% cotton flannel. Pads come in a variety of sizes and shapes: mini, maxi, long and heavy.

Liner Insert – Liner Inserts are made of 2 layers of 100% highly absorbent fleece to absorb the majority of your menstrual flow and leave the Pad Base relatively clean and dry. You can add additional Liner Inserts to increase absorbency and prevent leaks as well as purchase basic or with wings.

Pantyliner – Lunapads Pantyliners are ideal for daily discharge, spotting, or very light menstrual flow, and are popular worn as backup with a tampon, sea sponge or menstrual cup, like The DivaCup. Unlike Pads, Pantyliners do not have compatible Liner Inserts and do not contain a nylon lining. Lunapads Pantyliners come in a variety of sizes and shapes: thong, teeny, mini and long.

You can also purchase organic cotton Lunapads!

Lunapads can be washed by hand or machine in any temperature with your regular detergent. Pre-soaking or rinsing in cold water prior to washing is recommended (but not always necessary), particularly if the pads are heavily saturated. Avoid the use of chlorine bleach or fabric softeners to clean Lunapads, as this will decrease the performance and absorbency of the products and is harmful to the environment.

Pads 4 Girls

Since 2000, Lunapads has been donating reusable menstrual pads to girls & women in developing countries that do not have a way to manage their period. Many girls are forced to stay home from school during their period because they do not have the proper resources. This can then lead to an increased risk of dropping out of school. Lunapads wants to give these girls & women a chance to stay in school and change their life. You can visit the Lunapads website for more information on the Pads 4 Girls campaign.

My thoughts on Lunapads:

At first I was scared to try reusable pads! Once I got past the Ewww factor, I began to love them! It wasn’t until using Lunapads that I realized how uncomfortable conventional pads and pantyliners were! Now instead of uncomfortable, stiff, sticky plastic touching my delicate skin I have soft comfortable cotton! I immediately rinse my lunapads inserts in cold water and if necessary use a mild natural soap and then toss in the laundry and they come out of the dryer clean and soft! (You may want to note that I use Nellie’s Natural Laundry Soap and no fabric softener, just an old tennis ball in the dryer!) I immediately got over the ewww factor after rinsing the inserts several times. If you think about it, it’s no different than if you have a leak in your panties or underwear and have to rinse and launder those! I really like the concept of not having to re-snap another pad, you just pull out the solid insert and slide in a fresh clean insert! This makes changes much easier! Did I mention that the Lunapads are sooo comfortable! Lunapads can last for up to 5 years and that creates a great cost savings as well!

Lunapads provides a wealth of knowledge and information on their website as well as some great video resources. I love Lunapads commitment to helping girls and women in developing countries through the Pads 4 Girls program. This is a company that truly cares as women about our impact on the environment, our own bodies and others!

I am interested in the Post Partum Pad package. After women give birth, they “flow” for 14 days. Wearing the chemical laden disposable pads can irritate the vulva after 4 days.

  4. Rita says:

I am really wanting some pads and pad liners kit like the starter kit or even the sampler. I just got my first diva cup and am so happy with it. I want to get the pads and liners for those heavy days or for days I don’t want to wear the cup. That cup is the best investment I have made this year.
