I have yet another great way for women to help improve their health as well as that of the earth… the DivaCup! As I said in the Lunapads post… STOP! Before you say Ewww! and click away (like I used to think), let me encourage you to just read this post with an open mind, gain some knowledge and consider the possibilities! When I began to learn about all the health risks with conventional products and the environmental effects of feminine care products, plus the fact that these products along with the waste were being dumped in landfills that contained leaks and were seeping into our water supplies… well I thought that was much more gross!

What is a DivaCup?
The DivaCup is a non-absorbent menstrual cup that simply collects your menstrual flow. It is worn internally for up to 12 hours before needing to be emptied, washed and reinserted. The DivaCup is made of soft, healthcare grade silicone with no added dyes, colors or additives and it is latex-free, BPA-free, phthalate-free and plastic-free. The DivaCup can be easily cleaned with The DivaWash or mild soap and water. It is suggested that you boil your cup after each monthly cycle for 5-10 minutes. It is recommended that the DivaCup be replaced each year.
Sizes
The DivaCup comes in two sizes:
Model 1 – for women under 30 years old who have never delivered vaginally or by caesarean section.
Model 2 – for women over 30 years old and/or who have delivered vaginally or by caesarean section.

My thoughts on The DivaCup:
The DivaCup is a must have for every menstruating woman. I have used the DivaCup with two menstral cycles and I can say without a doubt that I absolutely LOVE The DivaCup! It did take some practice and several tries before I became comfortable with the DivaCup, but once I figured it out it has been a breeze. No more worries about running out of tampons or not having the right strength of tampons! Another thing I don’t miss is that awful dry irritation when you remove a tampon! The DivaCup is non-absorbent so it does not strip away your body’s natural lubricants. I have a strange period, I will stop menstruating for one day in the middle of my period and then it will start right back up. There was nothing more uncomfortable than removing a dry tampon or having to insert another one! Now I can keep the DivaCup in during this time and I don’t have to worry about having a painful removal!
I will be giving this to my daughter when she begins her menstrual cycle.
My personal notes on usage:
I like to use the fold down method and insert the DivaCup about half way in the vagina and then I squeeze the base of the cup to push the top open. I then twist the cup several times to insure it is completely open and then I slide the DivaCup into place. When it is time to remove the cup I lightly contract my muscles as if I were having a bowel movement and this allows the cup to come down. I grasp the tip and squeeze lightly to break the seal and gently remove the cup. There can be a slight discomfort when pulling the top portion of the cup out, however it is quick and I do not feel it is painful.
With any new product you will have a learning curve, so I suggest that you visit the DivaCup website and educate yourself before your first use. I also found some You Tube videos which were helpful.
