Homeschool: October in Review

OK I said this last month but… the month has flown by! It seems like this month went even faster than last month! Here are some of the fun things we did during October!

parasite science model We have been learning more about plants, specifically parasites & passengers. Here you can see our model of a parasite plant using straws!
Alana's Hieroglyphic writing We have been learning a lot about Egypt and early writing. Here you can see Alana’s hieroglyphic note to her friend Seth… something about Meet me by the pond on the corner of the baseball field when there is a rainbow and we will go fishing. Then we will roast marshmallows. Something about her falling and hurting her knee… then going west… stop… go… and in the end everyone was happy! :)
safari park We finally got to use our Groupon tickets to The African Safari Wildlife Park (which Groupon is running a special on today!) My camera battery went dead at the beginning of the adventure, but we were still able to get a few good pictures. (It wasn’t until after we were all the way through that I remembered I had my video camera!)
alpaca love Alpaca’s need love too!
Hooked on Phonics car Here you can see Alana is not very happy with the quality of the car we built after she read all of the directions to me! Thank you Hooked on Phonics for the great idea but poor design! I had to hear about it for hours!!!
nature hike We got to go for a nature hike and look for parasitic and passenger plants as well as identifying leaves.
passenger plants passenger plants
fall fun The girls had a blast burying daddy in the leaves! I just loved listening to their squeals and giggles! :)
strange bug We also found a strange bug near our brush pile that resembles a squash or stink bug but it appears to have some sort of stinger coming from it’s head. Can you help us identify this bug?
soccer We finished off a great year of soccer. Here you can see Alana cheering on one of her teammates after they scored a goal! I am so proud of her and the entire time… they did have a great coach! :)

Homeschool: September in Review

I can’t believe it is already the second week of October! I am enjoying this beautiful fall weather and we are trying to get outside as much as possible!

September went out with a bang as the last two weeks either the girls were sick or I was sick! Here are some of the fun things we did during the month of September!

crane fly A crane fly got into the house when some of the neighbor kids came over. The kids were scared of the gigantic mosquito, but Alana was able to explain to them that it was just a crane fly, not a mosquito and it would not hurt them!
flower Alana and daddy got to make a model of a flower from The World of Plants… it even included pollen (cornmeal)!
loom Here Alana is weaving on a loom we made, just like the ones we read about in The Usborne Book of World History.
picture to Tessa Alana colored a beautiful picture for her pen pal Tessa. It is a picture of the painted turtle we found in our backyard this summer.
Now I just need to mail it… does anyone else have that problem?
seeds We got to dissect and examine a dicot and monocot seed.
tent Alana had fun creating tents this month just like the ones we read about in our Houses and Homes history book.
tent She even made one with a dividing curtain one side was for cooking and the other side was for sleeping.

How we organize our home library

Now that we are adding more books to our home library, we really need to get it more organized! We are now cataloging our books with the FREE online website, Library Thing. We are tagging and organizing our books just like you would find in a library. This is going to help us when we need to search for a book in our home library. Often times we already have a book that may be on our reading list but we just can’t find it. Now we just enter the book in our search and it will tell us where we have it filed! As we have been cataloging our books we are finding duplicates! We had 2 Cat in the Hat books, 2 A fly Went By books & 3 Green Eggs & Ham books!!! Below you can see pictures of our bookshelves before we catalog all of our books. (Please excuse the mess!) I will be back in a few weeks (or months) with an update and after pictures.

FREE Homeschool Curriculum

books

Are you wanting to homeschool… but are struggling with the cost of prepared homeschool curriculum?

Last year we learned of a website called Ambleside Online that lays out all of the curriculum for you and most of the books can be read online for free or checked out from your local library.

Ambleside Online is a curriculum guide and booklist designed to follow Charlotte Mason’s method of homeschooling. Charlotte Mason believed in using “living books” to fuel a child’s mind and not textbooks that were just loaded with facts. Each year/grade has a list of books to lay out what resources will need to be collected or purchased, and an optional weekly schedule based on a 36-week school year to break the resources into smaller increments to help with pacing the books throughout the year. There is no fee to use the curriculum or website.

You can completely customize the curriculum to meet your needs. Some families follow it exactly as it is laid out, some tweak it here and there and others just use components of the curriculum such as the Picture Study or Composer Study. The curriculum uses as many free online books as possible, and there is no cost to use the information or join the support groups.

We used the curriculum last year and we were so pleased with the low cost option, especially since we had already read about Charlotte Mason and her techniques and were wanting to incorporate them into our schooling. This year we are using several different homeschool curriculum resources but we are continuing to do the Artist study and Composer study and that is one of my daughter’s favorite parts!

If you are not familiar with Ambleside Online or Charlotte Mason and her philosophy then visit Ambleside Online to find out more information.

You can also find a few free resources also based on the teachings of Charlotte Mason from Simply Charlotte Mason.

Homeschool: August in Review

It’s hard to believe that we have already completed four weeks of school! Boy did the month of August just fly by! Here is a highlight of some of the extra special projects we worked on in the month of August!

homemade mask
We got to make our own mask, just like the tribes that we read about in our Peoples of the World book.

homemade cells

Do you know what this is? No it’s not Jello its an animal cell and a plant cell! (OK, it’s made out of Jello!) The Jello was our Cytoplasm, we had a blueberry for the Nucleus, the ziploc bag for the cell membrane and our plant cell used a styrofoam cup to represent the Cell Wall!

eating homemade cells

Of coarse the best part was getting to eat the animal cell!

…and the plant cell!

batik painting

Alana tried to create her own Batik painting using a candle and paint. (I think it would have turned out better if we had different paint!)

homemade turban & sari

This is my “sorry” attempt at creating a sari out of a bed sheet and a Turban from a scarf. I think next time we’ll have my friend, Pretti, show us how it’s done! We also got to try an American take on a lassi.

paper beads

We also got to start on our handicraft for this term, paper beads! We will be making these threw out the term and them using them to make necklaces, bracelets and earnings to give a Christmas presents!
